3D mammography now available at both CharterCARE hospitals
Women who undergo routine mammograms at both Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital now have the latest diagnostic technology available to them -- 3D mammography. Both affiliated hospitals of CharterCARE Health Partners are now offering 3D Mammography exams. These exams utilize advanced breast tomosynthesis technology clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing.
The technology was developed by Hologic, Inc., which touts its “Genius 3D Mammography” exams as offering superior clinical performance proven to benefit women of all breast densities, as compared to 2D mammography.
“We are excited to add this advanced technology to improve detection and treatment of breast cancer,” said John J. Holiver, CEO of CharterCARE Health Partners. “Our health system is home to some of the most advanced cancer services in the region and 3D mammography is the latest tool we will now utilize to fight breast cancer.”
In conventional 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A Genius exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.
A Genius exam includes both 2D images and tomosynthesis scans. During the tomosynthesis-dimensional portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A Genius exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam.
Researchers have found that:
- The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam finds 20-65% more invasive breast cancers compared to 2D alone, an average increase of 41%.3
- Only the Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam is FDA approved as superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D alone.1-2
- The Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exam reduces callbacks by up to 40% compared to 2D alone.2,4
CharterCARE’s hospitals combine to offer a complete range of diagnostic, surgical, and treatment options for breast cancer. In 2016, the Breast Health Program at Roger Williams received full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Accreditation is granted only to those centers that undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of performance and compliance with 28 evidence-based standards of care covering 17 components of care. The program is led by surgeon Dr. R. James Koness, Director, Breast Health Program.
