Fresh food distribution site celebrates anniversary
Healthy living goes beyond access to doctors and specialists. Today, the focus is increasingly on preventative medicine and healthy lifestyles designed to keep people out of the doctor’s office. Since April 2014, St. Joseph Health Center, a CharterCARE affiliate, has partnered with Federal Hill House and the Rhode Island Food Bank to distribute fresh fruits, vegetables, and non-perishable items like diapers and children’s socks to the community. The population frequented by the Health Center is one that often has limited access to health care. Sometimes, fresh produce is a luxury that some families who frequent the Center can’t afford.
The program has been a clear success in its first year, with more than 35,000 lbs. -- almost 16 tons -- of fresh produce distributed to lower-income Rhode Islanders. A celebration and community health fair was held on April 23, 2015 in recognition of the one year anniversary of the program. CharterCARE looks at this partnership to distribute fresh produce as just another way we can help make our community – and its citizens – healthier and stronger.
