Roger Williams first to utilize new FDA approved approach to weight loss
In August, Roger Williams Medical Center became the first hospital in Rhode Island to utilize ReShape, a new FDA approved, non-surgical approach to weight loss that is proven to help people achieve and maintain significant weight loss. The procedure was performed at Roger Williams by Dr. Nabil Toubia, a gastroenterologist with specific training in the ReShape procedure.
With ReShape, two connected balloons filled with saline are placed temporarily inside the patient’s stomach. The procedure lasts about 20 minutes while the patient is comfortably sedated under light anesthesia. An endoscope is used to insert the balloons into the stomach, and saline is used to inflate the balloons when they are properly positioned. Once the balloons are inflated, the endoscope is removed and the insertion procedure is complete. The balloons remain in the stomach for six months. When filled with saline, the balloons help patients lose weight and encourage healthy eating habits by taking up room in your stomach, so there is less space for food. After six months, the balloons are deflated and removed during a similar endoscopic procedure. ReShape is another weight loss tool now offered at Roger Williams, which has been home to more than 3,000 weight loss surgeries since 2005.
