Message From The Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC). We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of our educational programs, facilities, clinical sites and faculty which I hope you will consider reviewing in more detail.

The primary goal of our training program is to provide comprehensive training experience in Hematology/Oncology. Our program has been training extremely competent and well-qualified graduates for over 40 years and we are a major teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine. Our trainees enjoy the resources available through a multi-site training program with their home-base at RWMC. Other clinical sites include the Providence VA Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital, and Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. Our graduates are universally successful in obtaining board certification in Hematology & Medical Oncology; currently graduates practice in both private and academic settings throughout New England and the rest of the country.

FELLOWSHIP DESCRIPTION

 There are a total of 6 Fellows, two in each year of the Program.

Educational Program

The Fellowship program at RWMC is affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine and is fully-accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The six ACGME core-competencies form the bed-rock of all educational activities of the program:

  1. Patient Care
  2. Medical Knowledge & Skills
  3. Practice-based learning
  4. Systems-based learning
  5. Communication skills
  6. Professionalism

Educational activities are provided in the following areas:

  1. Inpatient and outpatient Clinical teaching
  2. Expansive didactic Conference schedule
  3. Ongoing Research participation.

Fellows are evaluated by the Faculty through direct observation, supervision and didactic discussions as well as formal evaluations at the end of each rotation. All Fellows undergo in-training examinations with a view to preparation for their board examinations. Fellows are required to take the following examinations:

  1. American Society of Clinical Oncology In-training examination (ASCO-ITE)
  2. American Society of Hematology (ASH) In-service examination (ASH-ISE)

Clinical Conferences

All Hematology/Oncology Fellows are required to attend the following didactic conferences which are conducted at Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC). 

  1. Fellows Conference/ Morning Report (Each Tuesday 8- 9 AM)
  2. Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (Each Friday 8- 9 AM)
  3. Multidisciplinary Thoracic Conference (Second and Fourth Thursday of Month 8- 9 AM)
  4. Monthly Journal Club (Last Friday of Month 9-10 AM)
  5. Hemato-pathology Scope Rounds (Second Friday of Month 9-10 AM)

 

Rotations

Inpatient Rotations:

Rotations are structured to emphasize Inpatient Care and Consultations on the Hematology/Oncology as well as the Bone Marrow Transplant service and provide comprehensive exposure to diverse inpatient clinical cases.

Outpatient Rotations:

 During their training period, Fellows undertake elective rotations in Thoracic Oncology, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Genitourinary Oncology, Benign & Malignant Hematology, GYN & Breast Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Hemato-Pathology, CNS Oncology, Blood Banking, and Palliative & Hospice Care. Rotation sites include RWMC, Women and Infants Hospital (Breast & GYN Oncology), Boston Medical Center (Genitourinary & Thoracic Oncology, Benign Hematology & Coagulation), and Rhode Island Hospital.

Primary Site Clinics:

Each fellow has a primary site Clinic where they follow a diverse cohort of patients throughout their fellowship training with a dedicated Clinic Attending who also serves as a mentor. During the entire fellowship they have a half-day once-weekly session and they have exposure to benign and malignant hematology as well as mix of solid tumor oncology cases. Fellows also participate in multidisciplinary care of their patients alongside Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology physicians. Fellows have the opportunity to perform oncologic procedures (bone marrow aspiration & biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy) and develop proficiency in writing chemotherapy orders for their patients.

Research/ Annual ASH/ASCO Conferences:

Fellows have at least one month protected time during each year of their training to conduct in a research project with a mentor. All Fellows conduct a group-wide Quality Improvement project every year. In addition, each Fellow is encouraged to attend in a national conference of their choice every year and an educational stipend is provided by the program.
