Spring Cleaning for Weight Loss

Spring can be an inspiring season for many reasons. Warmer weather, blooming flowers, and let’s not forget: Spring cleaning! This time of the year always promotes the “out with the old, in with the new” mindset, especially when it comes to decluttering our homes. So why not spring clean for weight loss too? This can be a good time of the year to adopt healthier habits. Cleaning both literally and figuratively can have a positive effect on long-term weight loss goals, so let’s go over some tips for shaking off the winter cobwebs and changing up your routine this spring.

Start in the Kitchen

During this year’s cleaning, consider cleaning out your refrigerator and pantry. When we choose to improve our nutrition and diet, our efforts often get sabotaged by the temptations of junk food left over in the kitchen. Practicing willpower is good, however it’s usually the first thing to be forgotten in times of stress or fatigue.

Instead of relying on willpower, opt for making your kitchen a healthy food environment that sets you up for success. Stock your pantry and fridge with all the fruits and vegetables that are now in season for healthier snack options, and use the warm weather to your advantage by grilling veggies and lean proteins like chicken, turkey and salmon.

Get Outside

It can be hard to stay motivated during the colder months, so let the warm weather inspire you to get moving. It’s a good idea to take it slow at first, as many people tend to hibernate in the winter, which means our muscles and bones weaken from being sedentary. Try some gentle exercises when getting started with your exercise routine like walking, yoga or Pilates. Walking for just 30 minutes a day can greatly improve your mindset and get you on track for beginning an exercise routine.

Mental “Cleaning”

When it comes to losing weight, our environment often influences our mindset. Having a positive attitude through your weight loss journey is so important for your results. Having a supportive group of people around you can also help keep you on track. Whether it’s a weight loss support group, or your friends and family, surround yourself with people who are positive and can support you as you reach your goals. When it comes to mental cleaning, take the time to remember why you’re on this journey, and use that as motivation to keep going.
