Behavioral Health

Convenient access to all levels of behavioral health care is more important today than perhaps ever before. Our fast-paced, fast-changing society and culture is challenging at many levels and a majority of adults in our country will need mental health care at some point in their lifetime.

That’s why CharterCARE has assembled Rhode Island’s most diversified array of quality mental health services for adults…ranging from inpatient care to memory care, intensive outpatient care, addiction care, and counseling.

We provide behavioral health services at both Roger Williams Medical Center and Fatima Hospital, as indicated through this section

Behavioral Health at Fatima Hospital

Behavioral Health Emergency and Crisis Intervention Care

Fatima’s commitment to mental health care starts in our emergency department, where we offer a designated behavioral health triage and assessment unit within our larger emergency department. This area is separate from the rest of the emergency department and is staffed by trained behavioral health and medical staff. Here, seven days a week, 24 hours a day, staff can diagnose patients, determine the appropriate level of care and make appropriate referrals.

Sometimes, you or a loved one needs immediate assistance for a crisis like an acute behavioral health condition, panic attack, or severe depression. Our highly trained staff is available around-the-clock to prevent serious behavioral health disorders from escalating through early identification of -- and intervention for -- potentially hazardous emotional crisis.

Oftentimes, behavioral health issues are accompanied by other medical comorbidities. Our behavioral health service is located within Fatima Hospital, which means medical care is immediately available as needed.

Inpatient Behavioral Health Care at Our Lady of Fatima

The Inpatient Behavioral Health Services include treatment for adult acute psychiatric care as well as Geriatric Psychiatry. Services are available around the clock for people in need. Our goal is to help people through acute issues and get them back on the road to recovery.

Many patients face social, interpersonal and emotional challenges daily. Our program is designed to be a place where you can deal with these issues and find the support, care and professional advice or assistance you need.

Our services are located in the Marian Hall building on the Fatima Hospital campus. Our group size is typically 10 people or fewer, which allows for active group participation and individualized attention to patient’s needs.

Behavioral Health at Roger Williams Medical Center

The comprehensive behavioral health programs at Roger Williams include:

  • A 15-bed alcohol & drug detoxification unit for patients suffering from alcohol and drug addiction
  • A 12-bed geriatric behavioral health unit serving the mental health needs of patients over 65
  • A 12-bed dual diagnosis unit for patients with acute behavioral health illness and addictive disorders

Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Emergency Treatment Unit

The Behavioral Health and Substance Abuse Emergency Treatment Unit at Roger Williams Medical Center’s Emergency Department is Rhode Island’s only fully private site for treatment of drug, alcohol, and psychiatric emergencies. The new 9-bed unit is the second and final phase of the $15 million expansion and renovation of the Roger Williams Emergency Department.

The new unit is immediately adjacent to the Roger Williams Emergency Department and allows for direct access from the rescue unit bays of the Emergency Department when appropriate or for convenient transfer from the Emergency Department following medical stabilization when necessary. The new unit is a safe and secure space for the treatment of mental health and substance abuse emergencies and features private rooms with doors to respect the privacy of patients during the assessment, evaluation, and treatment.

Direct admissions to the unit that bypasses the main emergency department are medically cleared by physicians and/or physician assistants from the main ED. During their stay at the new unit, patients are medically monitored by the unit’s behavioral health nurses and clinicians. The design of the unit includes reinforced glass walls in each room that allow for line-of-sight observation by clinical and security staff. Behavioral health clinicians are masters-level social workers and licensed mental health workers. The unit is far quieter than a busy emergency room which aids in the de-escalation of the behavior of patients in crisis.

Clinical evaluation of patients in the units includes a careful assessment of risk factors including psychoses, dementia, and suicidal ideation. Family members are consulted to obtain a history and contextual information, and community-based mental health agencies where the patients have been treated are also consulted. Based on all of this a clinical plan of action is developed which may include admission to an inpatient behavioral health unit or to outpatient clinic care that is also available at nearby Fatima Hospital.

The Roger Williams area of service presents a high volume of drug, alcohol, and psychiatric emergencies. The new unit will provide a higher level of coordinated care than has been possible in the past and will also serve as a relief valve for other metro area hospitals as needed and as appropriate.
