About CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island

CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island is a community health system that features two acute care hospitals, a regional cancer center, a rehabilitation center, and a large multi-specialty physician group practice.

Established in 2026, through an acquisition from Prospect Medical Holdings, CharterCARE returns to non-profit status and local control and management with oversight from a board representing a majority of area physicians and community leaders. The board chair is Ben Mingle, CEO of the Centurion Foundation, which arranged the financing for the acquisition.

CharterCARE’s hospitals and affiliates are nationally accredited and are recipients of numerous awards and recognitions for clinical quality, exceptional patient care, and patient safety. Roger Williams Cancer Center is Rhode Island’s most comprehensive source of cancer and bone marrow transplantation services, and its Digestive Disease Program offers expert care for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions. Our Lady Fatima Hospital hosts a regional rehabilitation center and serves as the anchor for CharterCARE’s extensive behavioral health program. And CharterCARE Medical Associates operates a network of primary and specialty care offices throughout our service area.

Community Responsibility
CharterCARE regularly undergoes a comprehensive study of unmet health needs in the communities we serve. This study -- known as a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) -- is updated every three years to ensure our strategic plans and programs are responding to changing needs and demographics in our community. Representatives from Fatima, Roger Williams, and other hospitals in Rhode Island meet to review the study's findings and agree to collaborate on addressing the identified needs. While hospitals have community-specific implementation plans to address these and other areas, they will continue to meet collectively to address these issues collaboratively and analyze the impact of their activities. The Hospital Association of RI and the State Department of Health were also involved in the process to ensure statewide efforts for community health improvements were properly aligned.
In response to those extensive findings, CharterCARE has proposed plans to meet these needs. Click the link below to review our latest study and its recommendations.
